What Is a BDE Course?
BDE stands for Beginner Driver Education. It is a structured program mandated by the MTO that combines 20 hours of classroom learning and 10 hours of in-car training. Completing a BDE program:
- Earns you an MTO completion certificate
- Reduces your G2 road test waiting period from 12 to 8 months
- Makes you eligible for significant insurance discounts
- Builds a strong foundation of safe driving habits
Course Overview
20 Hours Digital Classroom
Learn Ontario traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving principles, and how to handle hazardous conditions.
10 Hours Online Homelink Activities
Complete self-paced assignments and practice exercises at home to reinforce classroom learning and build safe driving knowledge.
10 Hours In-Car Training
Supervised driving sessions with a certified instructor covering urban, suburban, and rural roads.
MTO Certificate
MTO-certified course completion may allow eligible students to take their G1 exit road test sooner and qualify for insurance savings with participating Ontario insurers.
Insurance Discount
Completing a government-approved BDE course may make students eligible for a car insurance discount with some insurance providers in Ontario. Eligibility and the amount of the discount vary by insurer.
