New to Ontario? Here's What You Need to Know
- You can drive with a valid international licence for up to 90 days. After that, you'll need to exchange it for an Ontario licence.
- To exchange your licence, visit a DriveTest Centre with:
- Your valid international licence.
- Proof of residency in Ontario.
- A certified translation of your licence (if required).
- If your country doesn't have a direct exchange agreement, you'll need to:
- Pass the G1 knowledge test.
- Take a G2 or G road test.
- Provide a driving record if you want to skip the G2 waiting period.
How Driviology Can Help International Drivers
Driviology has trained drivers from over 50 countries, making the transition to Ontario roads smooth and safe.
1. Beginner Driver Education (BDE): A Must for International Drivers
- Prepare You for Ontario's Roads: Learn to navigate diverse driving conditions, from winter storms to city traffic.
- Understand Legal Obligations: Know what to do in case of accidents, including reporting and insurance claims.
- Adapt to New Rules: Familiarise yourself with Ontario's road signs and driving laws.
2. Clear Misconceptions About International Licences
Many international drivers mistakenly believe they can use their international licence after obtaining a Canadian G1. Here's why that's incorrect:
- One Active Licence Rule: Once you obtain a G1, your international licence becomes invalid.
- Car Rentals: Rental companies require a valid Canadian licence. Misrepresenting your licence status can result in complications.
Safety First: Don't Cut Corners
Moving to a new country is exciting, but cutting corners in driving can lead to serious consequences:
- Protect Your Life and Others: Driving without understanding local rules increases accident risks.
- Avoid Legal Liabilities: Non-compliance can lead to fines, invalid insurance claims, and more.
- Understand Local Scenarios: Ontario roads have unique challenges like icy conditions and wildlife crossings.
